@kim -- I've thought a lot about whether going some kind of digital humanities route makes sense, now. The thing is, I really feel like to be a full participant in that discipline I need to go for a PhD, and I'm not at a place in my life right now where that's feasible. I'm not even sure if that's what I want -- for a lot of reasons. I guess to a certain degree I can jump into the game from where I am, and I think I do contribute. But there are practical limitations to what I can bootstrap myself into. At least, for me, there are. The funny thing is, I think I both crave and despise the "in between" kind of place I'm in.

Hi Martha,

Thanks very much for your post. It hits home for me, as I too find myself with overlapping social networks (instructional technology, open education, digital humanities, Wordpress, academic philosophy), yet never really feeling totally at home in any of them. Reading your thoughts on the issue reminds me that I'm not the only one who faces the challenges of straddling multiple networks.

The issue of self-identification is also extremely evocative, especially for me now as I'm moving out of the life of a full-time instructional technologist. It's funny how much the self-categorizations manage to define you, and how hard it can be to break free of them. All fodder for my own blog post :)

Very interesting post!

I'm curious if you see "digital humanities" as an option now. From what I've seen, digital curatorship is really still in it's infancy, with academia struggling to first understand how to do it, and then how to teach others to do it. I see this as a new world - one where you can call yourself whatever you like, and where it's easy to jump in the game while the rules are still being written.
